Selecting a search firm is no easy task. Many clients don't understand the recruitment industry -- they have a need and want a solution. Below are key questions to consider in selecting a search firm.
Retained or Contingency?
You cannot expect the same level of service from a firm whose total income rests on contingency. While some of these firms do excellent work, many tend to refer a plethora of candidates hoping that one will stick. They can't invest the time it takes to interview and reference check every candidate they handle.
How does the firm match your needs?
What are backgrounds of the key consultants, and particularly the history and stability of the firm? Does the firm have an in-depth understanding of your industry? The Energists specializes in the oil and gas industry. Each of our consultants possesses 18 or more years of experience in the energy and executive search industries.
Who will do the work?
Are you dealing with a PR person or the person performing the actual work? Through how many levels will your work be filtered? Some search firms have research departments. In others, the recruiter does everything (a case can be made for each approach). At The Energists, the consultants who meet the client will be the same people performing the research, interviewing the candidates, and presenting the results. We provide a seamless approach to recruitment.
For whom have you done similar work?
While search is a confidential service, beware of the firm that hides totally behind this veil. Insist on talking to someone that the firm has worked for. The Energists enjoys a reputation for professionalism, enthusiasm and performance. We are pleased to provide numerous references to confirm your decision to retain our services.
How much do you charge?
Do not be satisfied with "25 to 35 percent plus expenses." What is that a percentage of? Guaranteed first-year income? Salary and guaranteed bonus? If there are progress payments, is the final portion contingent upon any actual hiring?
What guarantees are offered?
Most searchers will not recruit people from client organizations for some period of time. Does this mean your whole company, a division, or what? What if the new person does not work out? Will the recruiter find a replacement at no cost or for expenses only? These are the types of guarantees that need to be discussed up front with the search firm you hire.
