Oil was discovered in Los Angeles near the present day Dodger Stadium in 1890 beginning the great oil boom in the Los Angeles Basin. Today it’s estimated that about 30% of that original play still exists underground and there are wells still dotting the landscape and cityscape. Over 30 gas and oil companies call L.A. home. But the real move on energy in Los Angeles, and California, is power generation, transmission and distribution. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is the largest public utility in the country employing over 9400. The LADWP operates a variety of power generation stations including hydro, wind, biomass, and solar as well as natural gas and oil fired plants. Like NY, CA passed a law that targets dramatic reduction in emissions by 2040 resulting in a boom for companies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, grid management, and logistics.
