With the assistance of the Texas Tech University System, Midland has become a center for renewable energy and hosts the National Institute for Renewable Energy (NIRE). The Permian Basin may be a huge oil and gas reserve, but Midland based wind farms provide the electrical power required for extraction. There are eleven wind farms in the area generating nearly 1000 megawatts of power with other projects underway that will triple production to 3400 megawatts. Midland may be the new Windy City.
